Insider Stories|Zhou Huiyi: Shining a light on the struggles of Myanmar journalists through the power of audio storytelling
English Version
In May this year, the 2024 Human Rights Press Award announced their winners, Special Editor Zhou Huiyi earning the "Podcast Award's" Honorable Mention for her series "Myanmar Journalists."
Huiyi, who has extensive experience in written journalism, quickly adapted to audio journalism after joining "Udn Global," developing her skills in audio reporting. Her unique background as a Malaysian drove her to focus on Southeast Asian news issues. During her long-term attention to the Myanmar coup, she came up with a topic: one journalist who left Myanmar and one who stayed. After finding suitable interviewees, she single-handedly completed two narrative-style podcast episodes accompanied by two written interviews as part of a multimedia report.
After winning the Podcast award, Huiyi felt more driven than happy. She believed she should always keep an eye on Myanmar issues. "If I were to report on the five-year anniversary of the Myanmar coup again, what else could I do? Could I present a different direction and produce more in-depth topics?" Her sense of responsibility as a journalist is truly admirable.
The conversation with Chief Editor Lin Qihao and Special Editor Zhou Huiyi is as follows, divided into two articles. This article focuses on the behind-the-scenes production process of the "Myanmar Journalists" series.
